Maschino hit the ground running this season with 8 individual winners last month and he turned the corner on Thursday with Razmas in the Kids Big Day Out Maiden (1100m) at Northam.
The Alwyn Park stallion signed off August with Bohemian Diamond in the WATC Recruiting Now Maiden Plate (1400m) last Wednesday. The Dan Morton-trained mare (Photo / Western Racepix) had been sidelined since March after pulling up lame in the LR Natasha Stakes (1800m) at Ascot.
“She’s was on a path to the (G3) WA Oaks but we didn’t get there,” Morton said following the first-up victory. “Time will tell what her favourite distance will be but she’s a beautiful filly and that was a pleasing start.
“She was all legs last season and has furnished over the winter. Hopefully, she goes deep in to the spring this prep.”
Bohemian Diamond (4m Maschino – Elsie’s Rhapsody by State City) made $45,000 through Ruby Racing & Breeding (as agent) at the 2022 Perth Magic Millions. She was bred by Ross Price and her dam is a full-sister to LR Bunbury Stakes (1400m) winner Reimbursement (State City).
Elsie’s Rhapsody has returned to Maschino for the last three years and she has a 2yo filly and a yearling colt with Price and his wife Tammy at Capel.
Morton also prepares Razmas who stormed home down the centre of track to defeat Safekeeper (Safeguard) and Sansanee (Bondi) in the Avon Valley yesterday. He benefited from an unimpeded run under Chris Parnham while there were traffic problems for odds-on favourite Our Mate Archie (My Admiration) closer to the inside rail.
Razmas was racing second-up for a syndicate managed by Jim and Trish Anderson. They bred him from their black-type mare Miss Razyana (Danzero) whose best foal to date has been Maschino’s grey flyer Fabergino. She won a half-dozen black-type events in Victoria and WA rising to a Group 3 in the 2020 Northam Sprint (1000m).
Morton has another feature-race in his sights for their Maschino stablemate Another Chino in the $100,000 Coolgardie Cup (1760m) at Kalgoorlie on Sunday. He was a Listed winner of the J C Roberts Stakes (1800m), Melvista Stakes (2200m) and Luckygray Stakes (1800m) in 2023 and had been off the scene for eight months until resuming with two midfield finishes at Belmont in August.
Another Chino was rated a good stayer in the making by Morton last year and there’s stamina in the pedigree through his deceased dam Apheta (Galileo). Second-dam Storm Fille was by G1 Kentucky Derby winner Thunder Gulch (USA).
Morton won his first Coolgardie Cup in 1988 as an apprentice jockey on Century God (Century) for his father Len and a Hyperion Thoroughbreds syndicate.
