Perennial premiership winner Peter Fernie has a huge lead at the top of the Goldfields trainers’ table and a treble in Kalgoorlie on Sunday helped seal another title this year.
Fernie (31) holds a massive margin over second-placed Paul Tapper (5) and there are more wins ahead for his filly Let Sparks Fly who broke her maiden in the MM Electrical Plate (1400m) for Lightning Bloodstock on Sunday.
Let Sparks Fly (3f Epaulette – More Spark by Domesday) led from barrier-to-box from an outside gate and was strong through the line to defeat Sassy Skye (Dundeel) and Edward’s Choice (All American). The daughter of former Darley sire Epaulette was bred and sold by Dawson Stud for $40,000 at the 2022 Perth Magic Millions.
Let Sparks Fly was selected by the Lightning Bloodstock sales team of Chris Rosier and Liam Kerr and is the second winner from their two buys in the Swan Valley two years ago. The Pearce Racing-trained gelding Zing To Win (Shooting To Win) had opened their account at Bunbury in November.

“She’s been a model of consistency and that win will be a big confidence booster,” Rosier noted. “She can go on with it now and is set to blossom next season.
“We first spotted her on the farm at Dawson Stud and she continued to impress us months later in the sales ring.
“There’s excellent residual value as a half sister Running By who is being set for a potential Group 1 campaign by Ciaron Maher.”
Running By (Impending) won at Caulfield and Randwick earlier this year prior to a move back to Melbourne where she was Group 3-placed at Caulfield and Flemington. She is raced by Seymour Bloodstock’s David Thomas with Dawson Stud’s Graham Daws and was hailed a black-type prospect by jockey Jason Collett after her Randwick victory.
“I let her float forward and it was a soft win,” Collett said. “To her credit, she handled it quite easily and can be quite competitive at stakes level.”
Lightning Bloodstock has several promising types in the pipeline including rising 2yo colts by Royal Meeting (Ire), Gingerbread Man and Spiritjim (Fr).
Rosier stands Spiritjim (Galileo) and his colt from Fortunate Lassie (Blackfriars) is with David Harrison in Serpentine. He’s a half-brother to Belmont winner Great Fortune (My Admiration) and they’re direct descendants of blue-hen Born Rich (Beau Sovereign).
