Hokahey rubber-stamped her recent transfer to the Sunshine State as a success with a last-to-first burst at Doomben on Wednesday.
Written off turning for home in the BRC Membership Hcp (1350m), Hokahey (pictured) responded to a savvy rails ride by Sam Collett to win running away for managing part-owner Geoff Walsh. She is a daughter of Yarradale Stud sire War Chant (USA) and is trained locally by Jack Bruce.
“That was a great come-from-behind win,” Bruce claimed after watching his mare save ground before coming off the fence to overhaul the leader Prima Asset (Star Witness).
“It was her first metro success and thanks to Sam for such a patient steer.”
The Queensland result continued the winning run of G & G Bloodstock operators Michael & Carolyn Grant who bred Hokahey in partnership with auctioneer Grant Burns and vet Kim Rose.
The Grants also bred and raced Alsephina (Star Turn) through an unbeaten summer campaign that climaxed in the G3 La Trice Classic (1800m) at Ascot on New Year’s Day.
They sold Hokahey for $60,000 through the Willow Dale consignment to the 2019 Perth Magic Millions and her half-sister by I’m All The Talk has been catalogued as Lot 19 by Ruby Racing & Breeding for this year’s Swan Valley Sale.
Their dam Southern Princess (Southern Image) won an Ascot nursery for Peters Investments and she is a half-sister to Shining Knight (Blackfriars) who won a G3 Belmont Sprint and G3 Colonel Reeves Stakes in their cerise and white silks. Second-dam dam Cool Business (Key Business) won 13 sprints to 1200m in Perth to Listed level in the 2002 Bolton Sprint.
War Chant (Danzig) has another strong line-up of yearlings for next month’s Perth Magic Millions. First to parade from Yarradale Stud is Lot 82, the colt from Edition (Duporth) who is a half-sister to Neville Parnham’s interstate Stakes sprinter Malibu Style.
