Fameux is a feature winner of the future for award-winning WA breeders Jack and Anthea Griffin but stewards have ruled the colt out of the $200,000 Breeders’ Plate (1000m) at Randwick this Saturday.
The Group 3 Breeders’ Plate is traditionally the first 2yo race of the season in NSW.
The Griffins bred Fameux by booking their Group 1 mare Daysee Doom (Domesday) into Champion Darley stallion Exceed And Excel. She won the G1 Coolmore Stud Classic (1500m) at Rosehill in 2018 and that was instrumental in her dam See A Victory (Mister C) being named WA Broodmare of the Year in 2017-18.
Fameux was one of the most impressive youngsters at Randwick on September 19 winning his 850m hit-out by two lengths from High King (Russian Revolution).
Unfortunately, he was suspended for hanging out and stewards advised trainer Annabel Neasham he will have to trial to their satisfaction before a first-up appearance.
“I’ve ridden him quite a few times at home and he’s never run off the track,” jockey Chad Schofield reported. “It’s a lot for them to take in at their first trial away from their home track.
“He was having a really big look at the TV screen and hung off the track.
“He impressed me and gave me a good feel up until that point and he’s a nice horse. I’ve liked him from the first time I rode him. I jumped him out last week and he handled everything really well.”
Fameux will eventually race in the Griffin family’s red and green silks and they have his yearling half-brother by Deep Field. The retired Perth couple also bred Group 1 winners Bluebird The Word (NZ International Stakes) and Porto Roca (Coolmore Stud Classic) in the 1990s.
Porto Roca is the grand-dam of G1 MVRC William Reid Stakes winner Silent Sedition (War Chant).
