There are better wins in store for Dawson Stud-bred filly Pierata’s Gem if her first-up victory is any guide out of yesterday’s postponed meeting at Doomben.

Pierata’s Gem launched an irresistible finishing burst in a capacity field for trainers Chris & Corey Munce.  The lightly-raced 3yo came from second-last on the corner to defeat Maikrow (Microphone) and Mehretu (Deep Field) in the Souths Sports Club Plate (1200m).  Photo / Western Racepix

“She was all class and no joke!” Munce Racing posted on Facebook.  “She put on a show with a perfectly-timed ride to storm home around the field for Martin Harley.”

Pierata’s Gem (3f Pierata – Canny Time by Canny Lad) was bred by Dawson Stud’s Graham Daws and initially sold as a foal for $50,000 at the 2022 Magic Millions National Weanling Sale.  She was pin-hooked by Carrington Park and reappeared on the Gold Coast at the 2023 Magic Millions Yearling Sale when she was purchased by Diane Bailey for $70,000.

Daws had purchased her second-dam Maritime (Falbrav) as part of a package in 2012 when she was carrying her second foal Canny Time.  It was a timely deal as Maritime’s first foal Charlie Boy (Myboycharlie) came out and won a Rosehill nursery on debut later that year and the following season added the G2 Danehill Stakes (1200m) at Flemington.

Pierata’s Gem is the fourth winner from four foals delivered by Canny Time following Canny Boy (Sebring), Dazzle Legend (Zoustar) and Elite Time (Written Tycoon).  “Canny Time boards at Yarraman Park and I sold her yearling colt by King’s Legacy to Michael Gangemi and kept a share,” Daws said.

“I also have a very nice weanling colt by Brave Smash and fortunately she’s back in foal to Exceedance.  The Brave Smash colt will be catalogued for next year’s yearling sales here or in the east.”

The interstate win came right on the heels of several Dawson winning graduates closer to home including Brazen Empress (Safeguard), Fiery Spark (Ole Kirk) and Above The Peg (Blackfriars).  Daws also bred and sold Hard Solo (All Too Hard) to Ash Maley at the 2024 Perth Magic Millions and she is coming off a couple of placings in the MCA 2YO Plate (1200m) at Ascot this Saturday.
