Mogumber Park-bred graduate Do I Feel Lucky turned the tables on his close relation Castle Road with an exceptional victory in the $80,000 Magic Millions Plate (1100m) at Ascot on Saturday.

Do I Feel Lucky became the first winner for G2 Schillaci Stakes (1000m) winner Dirty Work (Written Tycoon) when he collared odds-on favourite Castle Road (Safeguard) and went clear to score by more than two lengths from Golden Opera (A Lot) and Just Too Fly (Justify).

Castle Road was the first horse beaten in the straight, however, a post-race vet exam revealed the gelding to be sore in both forelegs.  He will now be sent for a spell.

Do I Feel Lucky is the first foal from Mindarie (Safeguard) who is an older full-sister to Castle Road.  Mogumber Park sent the mare to Widden Stud first-up and since then she has stayed closer to home foaling a filly Rommel and colt by A Lot (USA).

The Rommel filly has been catalogued as Lot 84 at the Perth Magic Millions Sale on February 20 by Mogumber Park’s Colin Brown and Fiona Lacey.

Do I Feel Lucky had been beaten three lengths by Castle Road on debut a month ago but the addition of winkers made all the difference on Saturday.  “He was a bit wayward first-up but we were still happy with the run,” co-trainer Jake Casey said.  “He did everything right today and the shades sharpened him right up.”

His main assignment this prep is the RL Magic Millions WA 2YO Classic (1200m).  The $250,000 sales-related feature race is scheduled for February 17 at Pinjarra.

Owner Maureen Daly had purchased Do I Feel Lucky for $100,000 at the 2024 Perth Magic Millions Yearling Sale.  “He’s a very nice animal,” winning jockey Luke Campbell said.  “He still has a lot to learn but will develop into a good horse.

“He was fast away and came back under me with cover behind Castle Road.  He was on the steel on the corner and really found the line.”
