Rocking Society was backed off the map prior to his last-start victory at Ascot and bookies weren’t prepared to risk him a second time in the Westspeed Platinum Cup (2100m) on Saturday.
The Awesome Rock gelding opened at $2.90 and punters piled on to make him a firming $2.40 favourite against locally-bred stayers. The Jason Miller-trained gelding settled one-out, one-back behind the leader Idyllic Ruler (Universal Ruler) and his supporters joined the queue once he collared Alaskan (Playing God) at the furlong.
“It was a genuine pace in front and he put them away,” winning jockey Lucy Fiore said. “He has a nice staying action and there’s more to come.”
Rocking Society (4g Awesome Rock – Society Gal by Faltaat) was bred and sold by Gold Front Thoroughbreds for $110,000 at the 2022 Perth Magic Millions and that’s exactly what he banked on Saturday for a syndicate managed by Miller’s wife Sarah. His overall income is now over $238,000 with Westspeed Bonuses kicking in $93,500.
“That’s good money,” Jason Miller confirmed. “He’s still learning and I thought he may have been a bit dour to win on the corner but he’s starting to put it all together. He’s tough and longer distances will be right up his alley.”
Rocking Society (Photo / Western Racepix) is bred to make the grade as a half-brother to Red Sun Sensation (G3 SAJC Chairman’s Stakes) and Chili Is Hot (LR WATC Belmont Oaks). Their dam Society Gal is a sister to G1 HKJC Champions Mile winner Sight Winner and third dam Duanette’s Girl (Balmerino) won a G2 AJC St Leger (2800m).
Gold Front owners Alan and Sue Olive have 18 yearlings entered for the 2025 Perth Magic Millions in February including the Awesome Rock brother to Rocking Society (Lot 134) and the Awesome Rock colt from Zabeel mare Kezzabelle (Lot 239) who is a half-brother to four winners.
Another highlight is Playing God’s first live foal out of Sepoy mare Alta Sull’amore (Lot 173). Her second and third dams – Hi On Love (Love A Dane) and Dance Hi (Key Dancer) – both won renewals of the G3 Champion Fillies Stakes (1600m) in 1995 and 2005 respectively.
