Pierata’s Gem brought up an interstate double for Dawson Stud this week when she won the Spring Carnival Maiden (1350m) at Doomben on Wednesday.
Trained by Chris and Corey Munce, she was bred and initially sold by Graham Daws as a foal for $50,000 at the 2022 Magic Millions National Weanling Sale. Offered by Yarraman Park (as agent), she was pin-hooked by Carrington Park and toured the Gold Coast sale-ring again at the 2023 Magic Millions Yearling Sale when her value increased to $70,000.
“Pierata’s Gem was given a great ride in front by Martin Harley,” Chris Munce said. “She fought super hard to keep her nose in front where it counts and was just too good for her rivals.”
The lightly-raced 3yo filly is the fourth winner for Canny Time (Canny Lad) following Canny Boy (Sebring), Dazzle Legend (Zoustar) and Elite Time (Written Tycoon).
“I bought their second-dam Maritime (Falbrav) in a package when she was carrying Canny Time back in 2012,” Daws recalled after Dazzle Legend won at Randwick earlier this year. “Lucky I did because Maritime’s first foal Charlie Boy (Myboycharlie) came out and won the G2 Danehill Stakes (1200m) at Flemington.”

Canny Time has a yearling colt by King’s Legacy and she foaled another colt by Brave Smash (Jpn) in August. Third-dam Pontal Lass (Marauding) was a Group 1 winner of the 1995 Flight Stakes (1600m) at Randwick for trainer Clarry Conners.
Dawson Stud was in the frame at the Kalgoorlie Cup meeting on Saturday when Influencing (Oratorio) was a convincing three-length winner of the Coastal Midwest Hcp (1400m). Daws bred and sold him to Pearce Racing for $60,000 at the 2022 Perth Magic Millions.
Influencing and his dam Surrendering (Danehill Express) hail from a Mungrup Stud family that has produced Moccasin Bend (G2 WA Guineas), World Of Fun (LR N J Way Stakes) and Surrender To Me (LR Raconteur Stakes).
Dawson can also play a hand in this year’s $500,000 WA Guineas with True Apostle (Playing God) at Ascot on November 23. The Dan Morton-trained 3yo was bred by Anita Vale Stud and sold by Dawson Stud (as agent) for $60,000 at the 2023 Perth Magic Millions.
