Maschino has carved out a niche as a reliable source of winners at Alwyn Park since his grey filly Fabergino flew on debut at Ascot in April 2017.

Fabergino returned for a light 3yo campaign that included a hat-trick at Belmont before graduating to a half-dozen black-type sprint victories in Perth and Melbourne for owner-breeders Jim and Trish Anderson.

The Lonsdale Park couple had also campaigned Maschino who was renowned for his explosive finishes winning 7 races to Group 3 level in the 2012 R J Peters Stakes (1500m) prior to a tendon injury that curtailed his career after 22 starts.

Maschino (Encosta de Lago) raced past 200 career wins at stud when Queensland Diesel speared through a gap for in-form jockey Pat Carbery at Pinjarra on Wednesday.  The Alan Mathews-trained gelding is an older half-brother to last month’s LR Belmont Classic (2200m) winner Weeraechoux (Jimmy Choux).

Their NZ-bred dam Rae’s Rae (Pentire) was a $39,000 buy for John Chalmers Bloodstock at the NZB Select Yearling Sale at Karaka in 2015.  She retired unraced after five trials for Matthews but has squared up going two-for-two as broodmare.

Chalmers and Matthews go back to the magical era of big-betting owner Wally Hannah and their part in winning the 1991 WA Derby and 1992 Perth Cup with top-class mare Mirror Magic (Lord Ballina).

Alwyn Park owner John Andrew is another long-term success story in the west as a Life Member of TBWA.  He celebrated 50 years in the industry at the Magic Millions in February and is two weeks into our latest foal-watch season.

“You have to have patience and go with the flow,” Andrew says.  “They continue to surprise you and that’s what makes it interesting.  Our first Maschino foal arrived on Wednesday night – a colt from Exquisite Star (Snippetson) for Bill Robinson.”

Maschino will be a factor on several fronts leading into the Ascot summer carnival and among the spearheads will be promising sprinter Jokers Grin.  He’s coming off a winning winter prep and is set to return at Ascot in November for trainer Bernie Miller.

Jokers Grin is a younger brother to Group 3 Northam Sprint winner Cup Night.  “He’s up and going and we will just take him through the grades,” Miller told Racing WA.  “I would like to have a crack at the Summer Scorcher and after a break you never know what’s around the corner.”

Maschino stands for an $8,800 (inc GST) fee at Alwyn Park.  John Andrew can be contacted for bookings or further information on 0419 929 483
