Lynward Park homebred Petrouchka claimed coveted black-type with a last-start victory in the G3 Belmont Oaks (2400m) and the Bullsbrook nursery struck again with Lano in the Glenroy Chaff Plate (1400m) on Saturday.
Lano (2g Blue Point – Fontainebleau by Alfred Nobel) was racing on debut for part-owner and trainer Ash Maley and benefited from another perfectly-timed ride by Willie Pike. The ‘Wiz’ is in superb form and he served up Lano late to win by a length from Cash Flow (Universal Ruler) and The Top Bar (Sessions).

Lynward Park sold Lano for $125,000 to Maley and fellow part-owner Paul Ferguson at the 2023 Perth Magic Millions. He’s by Darley shuttler Blue Point (Ire) from Fontainebleau who carried Lynward’s colours to Listed wins in the 2017 Belmont Oaks (2000m) and 2018 Starstruck Classic (1600m).
“Fontainebleau foaled a Russian Revolution filly last September and is due to Yes Yes Yes in October,” van Heemst reported.
“We’ve booked her into the Golden Slipper winner Farnan at Kia Ora Stud off his first crop’s popularity at the sales this year.”
The top-priced Farnan was a $1.2 million colt at the Gold Coast Magic Millions in January. He was purchased by Gai Waterhouse and Adrian Bott in partnership with WA-based Mt Hallowell Stud owner Craig Thompson.
Lano’s sire Blue Point (Shamardal) was Champion European First-Season Sire in 2023 with a massive 50 individual winners headed by Group 1 Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Turf Sprint (1000m) winner Big Evs. Besides Lano, his first Australian crop includes the Perth stakes-performers Heavy Metal and Blue Rocket who will also be set for spring and summer 3yo feature races at Ascot.
Lynward Park has Fontainebleau’s 2yo half-sister Summer’s Legacy in work with Grant & Alana Williams. She has been kept in cotton wool for a campaign that will hopefully include the G3 Champion Fillies Stakes (1600m) at Ascot in November
Summer’s Legacy is by Lynward Park sire Bondi (Snitzel) who is just a fortnight away from claiming the WA Second-Season Sires premiership for 2023-24. Bondi Bubbles (RL Magic Millions Trophy) led his ground-breaking 3yo crop this season and another black-type prospect is dual Ascot winner Icebergs.
Icebergs was on a path to the G2 WA Derby (2400m) in April but was spelled after a below-par performance when attempting a hat-trick in the LR J C Roberts Stakes (1800m). “The Bondi horses are starting to hit their straps now,” trainer Mitch Pateman said. “And Icebergs will make a good stayer in time.”
Lynward Park could be forgiven for thinking it’s Christmas in July especially if Petrouchka comes out and wins the LR Belmont Classic (2200m) this Saturday. Co-trainer Grant Williams confirmed the hoof injury that interrupted her Belmont Oaks preparation has cleared up and she can emulate Lynward Park homebred Baronova (Fiorente) who won the Belmont Classic in 2021.
