Forest View Farm owners Ben and Jo Duncan aren’t the only ones living the dream with outstanding filly Super Smink ahead of the G2 WA Guineas (1600m) at Ascot on Saturday.
The Duncans bred and sold Super Smink for $45,000 to trainer Dan Morton at the 2022 Perth Magic Millions and he cut her out to a diverse group of owners that includes three syndicates who won the Own The Dream competition hosted by RWWA.
Super Smink is the poster girl for Own The Dream and she was looking super schmick alongside Brittany Taylor for an Own The Dream promotional photo-shoot last Thursday. A couple of hours later, fellow Forest View-bred 3yo Good Measure won the Country Comfort Maiden (1211m) at Bunbury.
Good Measure was sold a couple of hours after Super Smink in the Swan Valley last year. He was purchased by Justin Warwick for $40,000 but later returned to the Forest View fold after Warwick dispersed his racing interests in WA.
Now prepared by Michael Lane, Good Measure was very impressive on debut leading all the way as a short-priced favourite under Chris Parnham. “Wow. Thanks to the Lane Train on that first-up performance,” Forest View posted. “That’s 3 winners from the 6 presented from our draft at the 2022 Magic Millions.”
Sired by Scenic Lodge resident Universal Ruler, he’s the first foal of Arazona (High Chaparral) who won four times around South-East Queensland’s provincial circuit before changing hands for $14,000 and heading west after the 2019 Magic Millions National Broodmare Sale.
His USA-bred second-dam Flamingo Guitar (Storm Cat) won a Naas maiden in Ireland for Coolmore Stud and her full-brother Fantasticat was a Group 2 winner of the Louisiana Derby (1800m) in 2004.
The Duncans on-sold Arazona but Super Smink’s dam Sminky Shorts (Snitzel) isn’t going anywhere. She was pictured under a rainbow at their south-west property last month after being covered by Playing God.
Bookmakers believe fillies will dominate the $500,000 WA Guineas (1600m) on Saturday and have installed Super Smink (Super One) and Keshi Boom (Spirit Of Boom) as $3 equal-favourites to beat the boys in the classic.
Super Smink won the 2022-23 WA 2YO Horse Of The Year Award after sweeping the RL Magic Millions Classic (1200m), G2 Karrakatta Plate (1200m) and G3 WA Sires’ Produce Stakes (1400m). She was a first-up winner of the LR Belgravia Stakes (1200m) last month before having her colours lowered by Keshi Boom in the LR Burgess Queen Stakes (1400m) on Melbourne Cup Day.
“I think it’s going to be a great contest and not just the fillies,” Morton told RWWA reporter Julio Santarelli. “There are some pretty capable colts and geldings in there, too. She had a nice piece of work on the grass on Tuesday and Chris (Parnham) was glowing – that’s a rare sight for him.”
Super Smink will meet Keshi Boom 4kg better for the Burgess Queen loss and Morton claimed she will be peaking for the WA Guineas. “Fitness-wise we’re coming to the point of where we need her to be and our focus has been on this one.”
