Backing up off a seven-day turnaround hasn’t hindered Cash Away winning his first test over 1600m in the Gotta Love The Bowlo Hcp at Belmont.

The son of Scenic Lodge sire Dash For Cash finished fourth to Aztec King (Universal Ruler) over 1400m last Saturday and trainer Misty Bazeley had no qualms sending him around again although the result was far from a foregone conclusion in the straight.

Stewards reported Cash Away (Photo / Western Racepix) was unable to secure a run until taken outwards approaching the 200m.  “I was sweating when he was held up but that was probably a blessing because he really hit the line once in the clear,” Bazeley said.  “We didn’t do much with him this week and he only ever wins by small margins.”

Cash Away (5g Dash For Cash – Lock Away by Blackfriars) got up in a blanket finish from the favourite Crescent City (Fiorente) and Mahaleo (Our Boy Leo).  It improved his record to 6 wins in 21 starts earning prizemoney of $216,890 for a partnership managed by Bazeley’s husband Aaron.

Winning jockey Clint Johnston-Porter had partnered the grey galloper to claim his maiden over 1000m down the straight at Pinjarra in January 2022.  “Back then, I never expected he would get out to a mile although I did tell Misty he would make a nice horse.  He can be a tricky ride.  There was no pace on today but he was there when I needed him.”

Cash Away was bred by Brad and Nikki McGinty and they sent his dam Lock Away back to Dash For Cash last October.  Fellow Scenic Lodge stallion Universal Ruler had chimed in with a Belmont double last week with Aztec Ruler on Saturday and Estimator on Wednesday.

Universal Ruler stands for $7,500 and Dash For Cash is priced at $2,000.  Both service fees (plus GST).
